{Connexum}
not the essay, just the idea
not the notion that everything is connected, that is not new
and not the question
how connected is everything
but the question
how
if everything is connected
is everything connected.
if things are connected
there must be something that connects them
and for many things that are connected
we know what that is
we can see it, measure it, build it, make it
we can name it:
the axles the shafts
the electric current the
data the code and the signal
but what about things that are connected and we
donât know what it is that connects them
what about
quantum entanglement
for example, einsteinâs
spukhafte fernwirkung
what about that?
there is no doubt that things are connected of which
we donât know how this is
and
if things are connected
there has to be some thing that connects them
even if that is
a thing we have not detected
a thing we have not yet detected and so not yet given a name to
a thing we have not yet detected but may yet find
we can find
that would give us
three things in principle:
energy
information
and the third thing
the thing that connects things
for which we donât yet have a name
but we have
maybe
names
for manifestations of it
the strong and weak nuclear forces
the electromagnetic force and the force of
gravity
what if these forces are to the third thing as
light sound heat motion are to the first (energy)
and as
data code and semantic content are to the second (information)
what if that third thing is a thing in itself
that exists and that is
as yet only
partly
understood
as humans we like sets of threes
trios, triumvirates, trinities
they give us a deeper reality
at first glance we seem to be living in twos
in the binaries of
male/female
plus/minus
hot/cold
dark/light
day/night
yes/no
1/0
but it only takes one thought to know
that
neat and simple as this looks and sounds
it is patently not our
reality
our reality
here too
needs a third component each time:
male/trans/female
plus/neutral/minus
hot/tepid/cold
dark/twilight/light
yes/maybe/no
1/anything in between/0
even yin and yang are not a duality
but a symbolic expression of the way apparent opposites complement each other as part of
the same
and this
is when it gets really interesting, when
dualities are not augmented by that which is in between
but are understood as the whole:
yin/same/yang
for which the quantum equivalent then would be
wave/wave-or-particle-depending-on-how-you-look-at-it/particle
what if
weâve always known this to be the case
and have expressed it in many ways
the elements of
the same the other and the essence
in platoâs timaeus
the father the son and the holy spirit
anicca, dukkha, anattÄ:
impermanence
suffering
non-self
what if that third thing
the essence, the holy spirit, the non-self
is
in principle
the thing that connects
everything
the third thing
the thing for which we donât yet have a name but that exists and that
we most likely
will find and be able to identify, a
connexum?

There need to be nooks and crannies; there need to be inbetweennesses.
There need to be othernesses and odd-ones-out that defy gravity, expectation, formula, form. The enemy of perfection is impatience, I know, and yet I find me a-longing, what for I know not. Could it be as banal as attention? This Monday was bluer than I have rhyme for or reason. Or song. And it was the Blue Monday, by name. Need I dramatise myself better, spectacularise myself? Invite preposterousness, scandal, sensation, or noise? Or simply dress up and say: âoi!â?
âThe problem,â Sedartis muses, in what seems a conciliatory mood, âwith standing in the room shouting loudest just to make sure you get heard is that you donât hear anyone else in the room, let alone perceive what is happening quietly, under the din. The greatest menace and greatest wisdom have this in common: they enter the fray in silence. The menace by stealth; it creeps up on you, seemingly harmless, sometimes friendly even, or if not friendly, then maybe quaint. The wisdom though simply spreads, where it can, unspectacular, slow, like the proverbial dawn, until it is really quite splendid and inescapably heralds the day. Iâm mixing my metaphors. You get my meaning.â
I inwardly nod. None of this seems new to me, or revelatory.
âThe problem with standing in the room silently, or muttering to yourself, is that you may not just be forever ignored, which is one thing, and bad enough, but taken for mentally unstable, dangerous even, certainly weird. There is nothing in itself wrong with weirdness, but when your task is to be taken seriously, itâs unhelpful. Your task is to be taken seriously. Accept the challenge.â
This piques my interest: how then, I wonder at Sedartis who has been with me for the last twenty months now, dispensing his snippets of âinsightâ liberally, as a Father Christmas hands sweets to children, do I make myself heard while being able to listen, do I speak but not mutter, do I send signals, not simply make noise?
âThat is easy,â Sedartis, unsurprisingly, now that I think of it, claims: âYou stand in the room, upright and tall as you are, not flustered, not blustering, not puffing yourself up, not screaming, not shouting, but saying what you have to say, with confidence, clear. When youâre spoken to, listen. When you see someone in the room who isnât being paid any attention, go to them: pay attention. Give yourself a rest now and then and sit quietly in the corner to observe. There, if somebody joins you, you may yet have your most meaningful conversation.
âKeep an eye and an ear out for the people regaling themselves, roaring with laughter. More often than not they are harmless, even if theyâre annoying. But be alert. Keep a feeler out for the subtleties, the changes of tone in the room, the small movements, the quiet arrivals. The sudden departures.
âListen out for the music thatâs setting the mood. Who do they dance to, who stand aside for. And then you may just have to pick your own moment. Because this room has no host. So it may never happen that someone who knows you invites you to say a few words and bids the others, âpray silence!â â You may have to pick your own moment and command the attention. As you are. Without fuss, but with authority, flair. Then, though, know what youâre talking about. That moment may just be brief. So be prepared and worth listening to, even if just to one or two, three or four. Thatâs enough. Be patient. Be humble. Be strong. And if you speak any truth at all, prepare to be shouted down, even chased from the building. Such, Iâm afraid, is the world that you live in. Your reward may never materialise: do not expect a reward.â
I do not expect a reward, do I?
âYes you do,â Sedartis thunders, now vehemence in his wrath. âRise above this need to be appreciated.â Is that even possible, I now seriously ask myself and Sedartis in tandem: isnât being appreciated simply another expression for being loved?
Sedartis is quiet. Have I managed to shut up Sedartis? Really? I feel a minuscule pang of guilt, but triumph as well. It doesnât last long:
âGeorge.â I donât think Sedartis has ever called me by any of my names before: âYour need to be loved is only human. You cannot, nor should you, be super or let alone subhuman. But learn to be loved in manifold ways, unspoken, unreciprocated, unneedy, generously, unspectacularly. Appreciate love when it is not shown, not expressed, but still felt. Yours is a singular path, maybe lonely, at times: fear it not. Youâve been given advice on this matter before, and you will be again: heed it, it was sound. Accept love, donât crave it: give love, donât take it for granted; donât overstate it, donât desire it, donât keep it: be love.â

Earth
And so, back. Down. To Earth. Where I belong? This, my home? This desert wilderness of beauty and voluptuousness, this abundance of colour, vegetation, insects and beasts; these cities, these people, these civilisations? This art, these quantities of stuff and rubbish; these tears, these cruelties, these abominations? This joy? These excellences, these wonders? These tastes, these smells, these flavours, these sensualities, these sweet transgressions, these experiences? This catharsis? This messiness, these quarrelsome foibles; these imperfections, these obstacles? And this weather?Â
This air that I breathe, this need to do so; these urges, this hunger, this thirst for immersion, this drowning, these rocks on the road, these symbols, these signs? These abstractions? These metaphors, this poetry, this song and this dance? That we make? About what? This love.
Everything suddenly feels disconcertingly real again, and Iâm not sure I like it. Iâm sure I donât dislike it, not as such, but I find these certainties confusing. These obligations to respond. These figures of speech, these formulations. These competitions for superlatives. These hyperboles. These headlines, these star-ratings, these ceremonies, these awards. These absurdities. These traumas of rejection or attraction, of interpretation of behaviour of looks and of glances, these whispered words, these games I refuse to play. These rules. These obediences, these categories, these schedules, these expectations. These parochial wordlinesses. This world.
This world perplexes, awes and bewilders me. Here I am, stunned to find myself on it, in it, part of it, and I am momentarily paralysed. This will not last, I feel sure, though why I should feel so I donât know.
For a long time now I have felt like wading through treacle, slowly, cumbersomely, glued to the ground by a sticky morass that would not let go. There is no escape from gravity in this place, except perhaps on aerial silks or on skis. The former are not for me, the latter very much so. I think me on the mountain, gliding down the glorious white, with the Alps in the distance and the molecules in my lungs, and I know what it is to be free. That I know; that, I can relate to. Everything else does not quite make sense. Which is strange: Iâve been learning and trying to understand, but it still is mostly as alien to me as the planets from which Iâve returned, richer in mind yet not much the wiser. At the end of the day there is always the here and now to make something of, and now that Iâm here, I might as well make the most of it. Thus I tell myself, over again.
âMostâ meaning âbestâ: meaning all I can do. What could that possibly be? If I allow my youth up to say about eighteen, nineteen â why not twenty-one: if I allow that to be my formative phase that doesnât yet count as my adult existence, then Iâm now halfway at least through what my adult existence can reasonably be expected to be: I can still look forward, but as much can I, must I, look back. That frightens the hell out of me. That Iâm here on Earth, effectively halfway throughâway over, if youâre counting from birthâfeeling pretty much as I felt right at the beginning, and not having made any impact at all. Not having really moved from the spot. Not having done more than tried, but without ever really succeeding, to take flight. Does that mean itâs too late? Is it ever, can it ever be simply too late? But for what? For some sort of attainment, of what? Of acclaim, recognition, notoriety, âfameâ? Or even just love? Can love be attained?
âBe not afraid of moving slowly, be only afraid of standing still.â I want to know what the soul is. At a quantum level: the science, the understandable, perceptible, conceptualisable part of existence that is not material, not intelligent, not rational, not emotional; intangible, insubstantial but essential and real. A Quantum Philosophy. I want to know what that is.
That part of me that I canât see when I look in the mirror and that I canât choose one of my names to put an identity to, that I canât express in wordsâand if I write another million or tenâthat I sense is forming and taking shape (without shape, of course), that is there and that others, some others, recognise in an instant (others, of course, never will): that is what interests me, makes me curious to go further, encourages me, yet to delve.
And so I take my cue, once again, and affirm: Iâm here now. I might as well make the most of it. Whatever that turns out to be: it probably really doesnât matter at all, but for my soulâif nothing elseâitâs better to sense me alive than just there; more joyful than to reject, to embrace; more gracious to receive what is given with thanks; and wiser to do what I can, but leave for someone else or another time what I canât; more courageous to take the challenge, than to say no; more human, altogether, after all, to say âyes.â
